thanks guys! Now I just have to get this motor stuff done. A kid I talk to a lot at my job who works at our local machine shop is hookin me up and took the port n polish job on the new head a lot further. I am just getting done cleaning it all up now and then we just have to throw it all on. It should be pretty sick. I should get my new tranny within a month or so too :)

Ok so if you dont know, my headgasket has been having some odd problems for a good few months now. Ive been getting black tar stuff (presumed to be oil) in my coolant for a while and have noticed my cooling hoses would swell a lot more than they should. My overflow reservoir has been spewing out brownish stuff too. It has been really annoying and causing a bog headache even tho it hasnt kept the car off the road since no coolant was getting in the oil. No one was 100% sure it was my head gasket at first but after the problems continued it became more apparent this was indeed a head gasket problem. After buying everything I needed little by little I finally found a really good place to fix everything. My friend who works at our local machine shop hooked me up with an amazing deal on getting all this stuff fixed. Im not going to say the price but holy sh*t it was stupid cheap.

Just getting started. I couldnt even make it within 100 feet of this garage without taking my bumper off first lol.

Starting the tear down. Intake and Exhaust mani's off...
    aimg189.imageshack.us_img189_448_img3359q.jpg

Oil Pan off. Pistons out. (We also welded a new nipple for the oil return line that wasnt JB welded in haha) Looking at the old gasket sure enough it was a little messed up. I was leaking compression into the cylinders and that was pressurizing the shit out of my cooling system. Then when I turned the car off it would push a small amount of water back into the cylinders. You could see some areas that were a little brown from rust on the sleeves.
    aimg690.imageshack.us_img690_3200_img3369n.jpg

Honing the cylinders. Pistons were in AMAZING shape so I didnt even need to put the new ones I had in, just new rings. (2 of my old oil rings were a going bad) Also, the rod bearings were in such good shape we just reused them since I didnt have time to order new ones. This motor is all original and had like 150k or so miles with no internal parts replaced so I was really happy to see everything in such good shape!
    aimg263.imageshack.us_img263_1017_img3367j.jpg

Heres the new head, ported, resurfaced, gasket matched, valve job etc. Looks really nice.
    aimg690.imageshack.us_img690_5840_img3365g.jpg

Heres the exhaust ports. I have to find a pic of the intake ports too.
    aimg189.imageshack.us_img189_2433_img3362d.jpg

We got a little excited and reassembled the head not thinking now we cant put the nut for the head studs on without taking it back apart lol.
    aimg204.imageshack.us_img204_2366_img3371d.jpg

A little problem lol. We noticed that the wastegate flange was about to bust off when I pulled up, no wonder the car stinks when I boost. My last 2 mani's broke so something will be done to solve this. For now we took the opportunity to fix some hairline cracks and also reweld the flange, this time so its not dumping the exhaust right on the turbo either!
    aimg209.imageshack.us_img209_8431_img3370.jpg

Welding a patch on the mani, and changing the flange.
    aimg189.imageshack.us_img189_168_img3380h.jpg

ARP headstuds and new head gasket are in.
    aimg263.imageshack.us_img263_9968_img3378o.jpg

The head, Oil pan, Pistons, and all belts are now back on. Just have a few more hours and the intake manifold and turbo should be back on, then the radiator and some other little things and it will be ALIVE!

Ok so we spent some more time tonight and finally got everything back together. We fired it up expecting everything to be perfect but the idle did a fast little surging. Also the car was running super rich. Everything seemed perfect so we were confused for a little. Adjusting the dizzy helped a little, we also turned down the fuel pressure and turned down the correction on the SAFC, checked the timing etc. It helped but not enough. Also the CEL was on. After checking the codes there were like 6 of them and I was a little worried! IAT sensor code, fuel system code, map sensor... all sortsa crazy shit. We had one of the IAT sensors off but plugged in and it just started smoking and I was like AHHH! It turned out we had the IAC valve plug and the IAT plug switched and it was freaking out the computer lol. Look what that shit did to the sensors. I dont even care cause I have extras. I was more relieved than anything. Anyways, as soon as I get those new sensors I just have to throw on the hood, bumper and strut bar and I can unleash the power wooo!

    Almost done :)
    aimg109.imageshack.us_img109_345_img3382r.jpg

    Sensors didnt like that haha.

I'm suprised you didn't just remove the engine :roflmao: Probably would've been a little easier...

Make sure you break in those rings before you "unleash the power" ;) :p

    Looks like fun!

I hate pulling axles and we didn't really plan on pulling the pistons out till we had the head off or we may have pulled the engine. Also, we didnt have a cherry picker anywhere around. The car isnt running great at the moment so that at least will keep me from getting on it too hard for a while while the rings seat. Its mostly tuning issues at this point. Its running mega rich for some reason, high idle too so I will have to just play with the SAFC and hopefully throw on a wide band soon. Ill keep you guys posted!

I finally got a good camera, Nikon D40 with a 18-70mm lens. I havent even learned most of the settings but I tried a few rolling shots since ive never done them. It was a learning experience and a lot of the shots didnt come out great (sticking your head out a window while trying to focus isnt super easy) Heres the better of the shots.

Ok so its not the head gasket thats blown... I just looked at it in the day time and the smoke is coming through the breather on my catch can. (I have it set up as a breather system) Basically it is all coming from inside the valve cover and from the crank case, not from under the manifold like I thought. Also I am like a quart low on oil and I just did an oil change and topped it off 2 days ago.

I checked my compression today and it read:
    cyl. #1 - 145psi
    cyl. #2 - 60psi
    cyl. #3 - 135psi
    cyl. #4 - 145psi

So now I am tearing it down to see what kinda horror happened to poor cyl. #2. I will let you know what I find. :-/

Well I finally got it all apart and it ended up being a cracked piston. Looks like im gonna end up going with forged internals, then Ill stop breaking things lol. I plan on running about 15+ lbs of boost. Ill keep you guys updated on what I go with ;)
